Why we prefer zinc for laboratory prepearatiom of hydrogen?

We do not use highly active metals like sodium, calcium and magnesium because the reaction of these metals with are too vigorous. To control and these metals are expensive too compared to zinc.

The moderately active metas- zinc and iron which are cheaper also should be more suitable. We do not use either iron because it forms some foul smelling poisonous gases of silicon, sulphur and phosphorus present in it as impurities. So therefore, we perfer zinc to other metals.
