Why we required democracy

Living life at its best presumes social stability and reasonable freedom (being social presumes always giving up some freedom). Of all social forms of organization, democracy (and more so representative democracy) seems to be the only one that maximizes quality of life for most.
If we were machines (non-emotional automata) other forms of organization would work more effective (hierarchical dictatorship). WIth human life being what it is (a coctail of instincts, emotions and very little rationality) representative democracy done well seems to fit the bill as the best form of social organization.
