The fact is that for the transmission of light rays a medium is needed (air, water, etc.). The Earth's atmosphere consisting of gases is able to pass the rays of Sunlight, thereby making it to Earth's surface.
However, if there are no gases (i.e. no atmosphere) which could be seen in space, the light rays cannot be transmitted. On account of this quality, the space would appear completely dark.
So we need to remember that for transmission, absorption or reflection of light rays there must be a medium.
