Several critical medical equipment is used inside the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital. The readings from such equipment are critical for treatment and subsequent well-being of the patient, inside the ICU. Even a very small interference in the working of these medical equipment can mean the difference between life and death.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from mobile phones are found to affect the functioning of some medical equipment – especially when in the ‘Talk mode’.

The sudden ringing tone from a mobile phone can also disorient a patient in critical condition and cause undue stress.

For these reasons, it is advisable not to use mobile phones inside ICU or the hospital ward.
