Gold is a very shiny metal due to its high refractive index and colour. However, It is very soft due to weak bonds and is extremely malleable and ductile. Hence, in its pure form it cannot retains its shape as jwellery and can be deformed very easily.

Therefore, another harder metal is mixed with the gold such as silver or copper to improve its hardness and make it more turgid and firm. hence a less pure yet more strong version of gold is used.

Pure gold is 24 carat.
