Mercury is the only metal that is in liquid state at room temperature. It's used in thermometers because it has a high coefficient of expansion. The mercury expands and contracts with the changes in the temperature.

we use mercury in thermometer due to the following reasons..

  • it does not fall immediately after checking a person's body temperature.
  • it can remain in its liquid state for long time and in upto high temperature
  • it do not stick to wall of the tube.
  • it is a clear shining liquid
