why we use negative sign with electrochemical voltage ?​

Negative electrode potential means a metal electrode is donating electrons to another electrode... so zinc is reducing electrode . it works as anode in electrochemical cell . while other electrode which is accepting electron acts as cathode in electrochemical cell .
