Why we use THE with proper nouns only?

By definition, a proper noun refers to something which we already know exists (even if it only exists in the mind of the speaker). We would say:
“The Pacific Ocean is to the west of the Americas.”
but not normally
“There is the Pacific Ocean to the west of the Americas.”
because we don’t need to tell anyone that the Pacific Ocean exists. This is the reason we usually use "the" before proper nouns.
