why we write direct proportion as x proportional to y

and inverse proportion as x proportional to 1/y


yea i know inverse is as simple as a reciporcal but even than what's the reason how we get that thang? i mean i am in need of a really nice explanation so that i (not so smart) can understand​

There are 2 types of proportions that are

  • direct proportion
  • inverse proportion

we say if x and y are directly proportional to each other means when x increases it increases with respect to y

we write directly proportional as

x \alpha y

and inversely proportion as

x \alpha  \frac{1}{y}

Because in a way both (direct and inverse proportion) are opposite to each other ...
