Why were 1st gen computers more difficult and costlier to produce commercially than the subsequent year computers?

Hey Dear,The First Generation Computers are EDSAC,IBM 701 etc.The First Generation Computers are So Large.They used Glass Filaments in them known as Vacuum Tubes.The Vacuum tubes are The fastest in Passing the Electronic Signals but Some how only the few specialists understood the languages.
