The forest laws had the following impact:


a. The colonial government imposed new forest laws according to which two-thirds of the forests were reserved. Shifting cultivation, hunting and collection of forest produce was banned.

b. Most people in forest villages were displaced without notice or compensation.

c. Forest Act was passed, rules regarding usage of forests were framed. Particular species of trees like teak and sal were promoted and others were cut

d. Now wood could only be cut for specific purposes and from specific forests under government supervision.

e. The 1878 Act divided forests into three categories: reserved, protected and village forests. . Villagers were not allowed to access Reserved forests. Anybody violating the act were punished
