Why were castles built at crossroads?

Castles eventually evolved into something of a palace for leaders and rulers, but their origin had a militaristic, strategic purpose.

Castles provided an advantage to defenders, either through elevation or via land formations such as rivers or rocky hills.
But castles also held a commercial reason as well, helping to influence control.
