☞ The literal meaning of famine is “extreme inadequacy and the scarcity of food.”
☞ Under the British Raj, India suffered countless famines. But Most of the famines were the result of policies of British and Few were due to rain/floods.
☞ The British had a ruthless economic agenda when it came to operating in India and that did not include empathy for native citizens.
❥Here below are the major factors of Famines caused during British rule:-
Famines occurred in British India due to the inadequate transportation of food, which in turn was caused due to an absence of a supportive political and social structure. In India as a whole, the food supply was rarely inadequate, even in times of droughts.
Money was drained from the peasant to the landlord and for paying for the British military effort and made it impossible for the peasant to procure food.
Also In British Era, Farmers were unable to do cultivation, as they did't have any money or even a bread to eat.So, farmers stopped to cultivation and how they will cultivate anything they don't have even any good water source, electricty, agricultural equipments, etc..So, they protested against British control. Later, this results into so many famines. Some of cruelty by British Govt. are given below:-
Collecting heavy taxes
Over burdening the peasants .
No protection to land tenants .
No loans for purchasing seeds and fertilisers.
Heavy rate of interests by money lenders .
Fall of prices for crops .
No support from the British government .
No concern for Zamindars / land lords to improve land fertility .
↝After all the above points we can say that, the famines in the British era were not due to a lack of food, but due to the inequalities in the distribution of food, which was linked with the inequality to the undemocratic nature of the British Empire.
