THE BRITISH FORCED THE PEASANTS TO GROW CASH CROPS LIKE INDIGO AND TOBACCO . THIS LED TO SCARCITY OF FOODCROPS . ALSO THE LANDS OF PEASANTS WERE TAKEN IF THEY DELAYED THE TAX. SO THE FARMERS HAD NO LAND TO CULTIVATE GRAINS

Well, the British never cared about the Indian crops. When the famines occured, they did not even care to look upon it.
