Because they had no other choice. To earn some money and make their living they had to grow opium. The Britishers also threatened them to grow opium doesn't matter how their land loses fertility.

-Opium used to spoil the land..it needed a very fertile soil to grow.
-The farmers had to purchase land and fertilizers from rich landowners to grow opium
-the money that farmers used to get after selling opium was also not satisfying.
