1) the crop had to be grown on the best land, on feilds that lay near villages and were very fertile

2) on this land, peasants usually produce pulses, if planted opium on this land, then pulses could not be grown on inferior land where harvests were poorer and uncertained.

3) many cultivators owned no land. to cultivate they have to pay rent or lease land from landlords and the rent charges on the good lands near villages were very high.

4) the cultivation of opium was difficult process. the plant was delicate and the cultivators had to spend long hours nurturing it. this meant that they did not have enough time to care for the other crops.

5) the price, the govt. paid to the cultivators for opium, the money paid was very low. it was unprofitable to the cultivators to grow opium.

HOPE IT HELPS :))
