JOURNAL ENTRIES OF ENRIQUE ALBERTO, A SAILOR ON A SHIP

September 4, 1492

We are sailing off of Spain to Puerto Rico. From there we will go to the North/Eastern area of Florida. We will stay there for a few months and learn about the land. Then, we will sail to the Virginia/Carolina area. There we will also explore the land too. We will be sending regular messengers back to Spain reporting on our progress to our mighty king.

We are working to keep our masts up, even though weather is not in our favor all the time. However, we cannot change the past and the present but might as well do the future. We are working to keep our masts up and keep the people safe and healthy. Some people are sick but I am sure our healers will make them fine in no time. Now, it is time for me to return to my duty, I shall be back with more information. Until then I will pray that the Lord will protect us on our journey.

We are now in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Our masts

are not failing and At least 15 people from each ship have died from sickness, or loss of food. There was a storm last night and 5 soldiers fell overboard and drowned. Everyone is in a panic, but we have to believe when we get there everything will be okay. That all of these sacrifices were worth it. Captain from the civilian ship predicts about 2 more weeks until we reach Puerto Rico. People are starting to drop like flies. However, we have a sizeable amount of people, but we have great grief for those who have lost their lives. The king is not going to like this. At least we still have plenty of supplies to last us. . .

I think I spoke too soon when I said we have plenty of supplies. Another storm hit and half of our food was washed out...Although we have finally reached Puerto Rico. We will rest here for about 3 weeks, stock up on supplies, and let the people rest and get healed if necessary. We have been progressing pretty well. We have not faced any dangerous things yet and I hope we won't. Farewell for now.

We are back out at sea! Captain says there is about 1 month until we reach the new world. But we don’t know. We’re sailing in unknown regions and I’m afraid we will get lost. Stranded, or even overpowered by enemies. I have recently heard that France is searching for the new world as well. All of the supplies have been recovered when we were in Puerto Rico. Sadly, the captain has gotten very sick and things don’t look very good. We have never seen this disease before and we don’t know if it’s contagious...Like I said before I really hope all these sacrifices are worth it. Although there has been some trouble on this journey but we are more than half way to the new world.

WE CAN SEE IT! THE NEW WORLD IS UPON US!

The land is green and vacant. We have hoped to stay for 2 months, but sadly the Captain passed away and we don’t have an extra Captain. So we might be held up here for a while. This experience here has been amazing. Thankfully one of our explorers have realized that it will take about 5 weeks to arrive in the northern part of the land. Sadly, the children on the voyage have not been doing as well as we hoped. But there are still about 10 kids remaining. Off to discover!

We are finally at the northern land! The remaining people from the voyage are ecstatic and are already settling in. Everyone is doing well. After a couple of weeks in the southern part, I have been promoted to the Captain! It has been very hard, but I have got us here, so I’d say that is pretty good. It took my a couple days to get the hang of things, but the Captains from the other boats have been very helpful and supportive.

We have already gone out and started exploring. They return every night to rest, but at the crack of dawn they get up and go out again. I've heard that they have found spices and tobacco. Also that we have found waterways. So I think that

this is a great spot and I hope we stay put.

The explorers are in the midst of writing a letter to the King on an update on what has happened on our journey.

This was an incredible journey with ups and downs, but we learned a lot and I can’t wait to start our future here. Together. As a family.

I will be in touch.
