Before the invention or rather introduction of printing press in India, manuscripts were handwritten and that also in certain specific languages such as Sanskrit. Therefore, it was not of much use to the wide masses who knew only the vernacular languages. Also, hand-writing a manuscripts was a difficult job in itself and therefore other methods such as inscriptions and coins were preferred by the Indian Kings and rulers. Hope this helps!
