I am assuming that you are referring to people in America specifically. There are a few reasons.
One is that there were movements within some Christian circles that since the Bible says Thou shalt not kill then people should not go to war to kill another human being. The classic movie Sgt. York explores this idea.
Another is that people were realizing that war caused more harm than good when you consider the loss of life to young men in their prime, the fact that wars are costly. (in Canada the income tax was introduced to pay for the cost of sending Canadians to fight for the British in the WWI.) People were realizing that wars increase our hatred for our fellow humans instead of being more accepting and open to others who are different.
There was also the attitude regarding WWI that it was a European war and should not be of concern to North America.
