People were forced to steal from forests as:

• Villagers wanted forests with a mixture of species for their fuel, fodder.
• The forest department wanted hard trees for construction like teak.
• They could make water bottles from dried scooped out gourds.
• They could also make umbrellas and baskets and they used bamboo for building fences
• They could make medicine from herbs.
• After the Forest Act was passed, it meant that grazing their cattle, collecting fruits and roots, hunting and fishing became illegal.
• So, they had to steal food from the forests
