we need reservations because we have social inequality in India. to understand reservation we should 1st understand the different type of inequality (there are other types also except these two types)
1. natural inequality- for example if some people are naturally more powerful than other people and some people are naturally weaker than other.this inequality is congenital.
2. social inequality - there is one other kind of inequality exist in india is called social inequality it was created by society long ago. Basically there are two classes in society one is upper cast and other is lower cast or untouchable .
Untouchables spread all across the India they were poor , stigmatized and often on the recieving end of upper cast violence.they worked in the village in the lowliest professions,as farm servants, agricultural Labourers, cobblers and scavengers. By the canons of hindu orthodoxy their touch would defile the upper cast and in some region their very sight too. They were denied excess to land and to water sources ,even their home were set apart from main village
Now it is seen that after independence socially backword class turn out to be backward in education as well. For giving them same equal stutus in society, services and administration the reservation is adopted by the constituent assembly. It can be thought like it is the compensation for untouchablty.
And there is no any questions like whether reservation should be there or not the question should be like up to how much level reservation should be adoptd based on social backwardness.there are some commission which measure the social backwardness on the basis of survey.
One more aspects of reservation is that it is not based on the economical back ground reason behind this is social backwardness is more permanent in nature it goes generation to generation but the economic backwardness can change within a year so it can not be based on economic background.
