The socialists were active on the country side. They formed Social Revolutionary Party in 1900, which struggled for peasants rights. Due to the following reasons they were active on the country side :
- The party demanded that land belonging to nobles be transferred to peasants.
- Russian peasants were different from other European peasants. Periodically, they pooled their land together and their commune divided it according to the needs of individual families.
- Social democrats believed that peasants, not workers, would be the main force of revolution. With them, Russia could become more socialist more quickly than others. Then, land committees were formed for the re-distribution of lands. Encouraged by this, peasants seized land in 1917.
