The Amarnayakas were very powerful because they were given the power to collect tax in their territories assigned to them by the king in the Vijayanagara empire. They eventually became the hereditary owners of this land in return for a fixed amount that they paid to the king on a yearly basis.
Moreover, they were also the military commanders of the kingdom and each Amarnayaka had a certain number of soldiers under him to help him during a war.
