The American and his accomplice were not handed over to the police because the stolen ring was recovered due to the vigilant eyes of the narrator.

The American walked in as a prospective customer and checked out some antique rings. Finally, he planned to leave as he found nothing interesting. But, a ring is found missing and he was searched thoroughly. Yet, there was no trace of the ring. After he walked out, a woman stepped in. While the American was inside, she was outside looking at the urns and photographs of gravestones in a display window of another shop. After a while, she too tried to make her way out when she was caught red handed.

It so happened that the American had selected a ring and stuck it on the counter with chewing gum just before it was found missing. After he walked out, the lady pretended to check out some rings. As she was doing this, she dropped a paper. On the pretext of picking it up, she bent down and kept her left hand at exactly the same spot where the American had stuck the ring. She then proceeded to put the ring in her left pocket. The narrator had noticed every action of both the American and his accomplice, which made it easy to find out where the ring was.

There was some negligence in the duty of the employees. Perhaps it was due to this point that they were not handed over. Also the woman ran away from the shop soon as she handed over the ring to assistant jeweller William Morris.
