Answer:

As the British East India Company arrived and flourished in India, the country became one of the most important colony for the British empire.

The colonial province of the East India Company meant that the artisans and small traders needed to meet the demands of the British Empire first. The artisans and the people associated with handicrafts did not have the freedom to create products as per their choice to meet the local market demands.

The oppression done by the local officers of the East India Company forced the local artisans to sell their goods at a much cheaper rate than the market rate. This resulted in an economic instability among the traders and artisans.

Indian rulers, who were one of the primary customers of the local products, were overthrown and British rulers took their positions, patronizing only the English goods.

This also caused a heavy toll on the local artisans market, as the demand for their manufactured goods was reduced.

The company started to import goods and clothes, made in England using machines, and sold them at a much cheaper rate. The local artisans had to fight this ‘industrial revolution’ to speed up their manufacturing, which was not possible using the under-developed tools used by them.

British govt started to put high import duties for goods to be imported into the United Kingdom and Europe. This resulted in the unavailability of the European markets to the Indian craftsmen and traders.

Due to the above-mentioned factors, the local crafts market took a huge blow with the advent of the East India Company in India and hence they were unhappy with the colonial rule.

The artisans and small traders were unhappy with the rule of English East India Company because they did not have the choice to create whatever they wish to but to succumb to the demands by the British.

Explanation:

  • These artisans were oppressed by the officers to sell their goods at a low price than the market rate.
  • Indian rulers were the primary consumers of the products and they were sidelined and overthrown by the British rulers.
  • The clothes sold in the market were manufactured from machines and could be bought at a lower price which made the small business of these artisans difficult.
