Explanation:

The East India Company acted as trader even after becoming the ruler of Bengal. They however could not form a regular system of collecting and assessing the tax. The prices of goods procured by the East India Company soon doubled  which brought huge profits to them.

The Company previously  imported precious metals like gold and silver from Britain so that they could buy goods from India. They would then export them  to Europe. Ever since they became the Diwan of Bengal things started to change. They started utilizing the revenues which they garnered from Bengal to buy their own goods.

This led to a downfall in the economy of Bengal which started to show sign of suffering. Peasants could not pay their dues, and production of goods fell drastically for the artisans because the Company forced the artisan to sell their goods at very low prices.
