The Delhi sultans were interested in cutting down the forests for many reason like they wanted to speed up their movement of their army which moves for wars and even some other reason. They wanted to even speed up and even bring more and more agricultural products so they cut down the forests for this purpose also.
No, in our time the deforestation is done for other reasons like for trading purpose, for wood, for even the natural minerals like coal, charcoal etc. But yet the process of deforestation i.e. cutting down the forests didn't change.

Answer:
Forests were cleared in the Ganga-Yamuna doab and hunter gatherers and pastoralists expelled from their habitat. These lands were given to peasants and agriculture was encouraged. New fortresses and towns were established to protect trade routes and to promote regional trade. No, deforestation does not occur for the same reasons today. Today forests are cleared due to overpopulation, urbanization and commercialization.
