Britishers ruled India in the 17th century. Many of the Indian products were in a huge demand in the European market and the government of India at that time wanted to have monopoly over this market. Along with Britishers many other European countries wanted the monopoly too. So, to have the monopoly over the trade Europeans were very keen to find a direct sea route to cut the expenses of transportation.
