Why were the executions of Sacco and Vanzetti controversial?
Answers
In spite of foreign protests in defense of their innocence, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, who were Italian-born anarchists, were assassinated for the crime of murder
EXPLANATION:
A paymaster for a shoe company that was in South Braintree, Massachusetts was shot and killed along with his guard on 15 April 1920. With more than $15,000 the assassins, who were identified as two Italians, fled the country. Sacco and Vanzetti were arrested and charged with a crime after they have been in a garage claiming a car that the police say was related to the crime. Though both men carried guns and had made untrue statements upon their arrest, neither had an earlier criminal record. On 14 July 1921, they were convicted and sentenced to death.
Anti-radical sentiment was heavy in America at the time and many deemed the prosecution of Sacco and Vanzetti unconstitutional. Police had no evidence of the money stolen and many of the other proofs were eventually debunked. In the next few years, there have been occasional demonstrations over Massachusetts and around the globe for their release, especially following the arrest in 1925 of Celestino Madeiros who had been convicted of the Joe Morelli gang crime under a murder penalty. The Supreme Court of the state declined to change the decision and Governor Alvan T. Fuller of Massachusetts denied clemency. Protest was held in cities across the world and bombing was set in New York City and Philadelphia in the days leading up to the execution. The electrocution took place on 23th August.
In 1961, a study of Sacco's pistol with the aid of modern forensic methods seemed to show that his pistol that killed the man, although there was no evidence to support the guilt of Vanzetti. Governor Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts released in 1977 a statement condemning Sacco and Vanzetti, claiming that their names were treated unfairly and should be immune to any stigma.
