They were originally called Jinas or Jains or those who have conquered their desires

Jains use a beautiful word jina for their tirthabkars which literally means conquerer but not of the worldly things. it regers to conquering the inner self. so those who follow the path of jinas are called jains. the word jain has it self originated from the word jina.
