why were the Jacobin's of France known as sans culottes

 The members of the Jacobin clubs wore long trousers and even called themselves the 'sans culottes' meaning without knee breeches to distinguish themselves from the aristocracy who wore the fashionable knee breeches.  therefore they were called knee breeches

they were know as sans colottes bcoz they dont wore knee breaches and had their seperate dress code which was stripped pant and shirt
So they were known as sans culottes
