Well for starters, the King overthrew a democratic government and established a rule by a council that he chose. They were also split into classes and weren't allowed to criticize the king in any way. The military also had huge power and worked for the king so that was a problem for anyone who wanted to protest or anything similar.

The Nepalese were not satisfied with the panchayat system due to the following reasons-

  • When the Panchayat System was first implemented, it was said that the system was "experimental". But later, in 1962, the first amendment to Nepal's constitution declared the Panchayat System to be "partyless" and the only system that existed.
  • For the simple reason that they were faction-oriented components that impeded the nation's general development, King Mahendra forbade the political parties from operating.
  • Even the name of the government was changed to His Majesty's Government of Nepal, and the titles of state institutions were given a royal prefix.
  • The Panchayat System granted the King complete dominion over the country.
  • The King had the authority to modify any judicial ruling and could nominate and remove Supreme Court justices.
  • He was the supreme military commander and had the power to alter the constitution at any moment.
  • Modern political parties and civil society did not accept the appropriation of democracy or the restriction of fundamental rights.
  • A mildly violent uprising against the oppressive Panchayat System was launched by Nepali Congress as a result of discontent in the late autumn of 1961.
