The stranger’s identity became the topic of speculation in the town. Mrs. Hall defended him, repeating his own words that he was an ‘experimental investigator.’ Several other people of the town were of the view that he was a criminal trying to escape justice. Mr. Gould, the probationary assistant, imagined that the man must be an ‘anarchist’ who was preparing explosives. Another group of people believed that he was a pie- bald and could make a lot of money if he chose to show himself at the fairs. There was another view that explained the entire matter by regarding the stranger as a harmless lunatic. Between these main groups were weavers and compromisers. The village folk had few superstitions and the thought of the supernatural was whispered in the village. But it was only credited among the women folk. But whatever they thought of him, people in Iping on the whole, agreed in disliking him. The youngman called him a ‘Bogey Man’
