The railways and canals were developed by French in Vietnam because :

1) For the increase in production and cultivation of rice, the French had developed the irrigation and canal systems near Mekong Delta.

2) For this reason, the drainage of land was done in the delta, to make the irrigation process easier.

3) To link a bridge or a connection between China and Vietnam, Trans-Indo-China network for railways were constructed.

4) This connected the southern and northern part of the cities.
