the rich who played cricket were called the Amateurs because
1) They considered sport a kind of leisure. They played it for their pleasure and not for money
2)There was not enough money in the game for the rich to be interested

They played cricket mainly for their pleasure. They played in their region. They sponsored cricket. They did not play for themselves. They represented their region. So they were called amateurs.

They were not professionals as they did not play the sport for prize money. They were not paid for playing cricket matches and games.  Professionals play for themselves, the prize money and are usually sponsored too.
