\large{\boxed{\rm\orange{ Sepoy \: Discontentment }}}

Sepoy discontentment was one of the major reasons for The Great Uprising of 1857.

British had controlled every sphere of their life and thus they were unhappy.

The reasons for sepoy mutiny were :

  • They were prohibited from showing religious marks.
  • There was no permission for exhibiting caste marks.
  • Hindu sepoys weren't allowed to put tilak and Sikh sepoys were asked to remove turbans .
  • They were forced to shave beards.
  • They were not treated as humans but as pigs.
  • They wages of Indian sepoys weren't equal to British sepoys. British sepoys were paid more in money as well as given promotions.
  • Indian sepoys weren't given complete bhatta . (Bhatta was the additional salary or income that was given when soldiers participated in wars in Foreign lands.)
  • Sepoys were forced to go overseas . This was against all the religions of the then India.
  • The annexation of Awadh on grounds of mis - government also infuriated sepoys as most of them came from Awadh.

These all factors were responsible for discontentment but the revolt started when Mangal Pandey was executed as he denied from using the Enfield rifle that had a special cartridge that covering or layer of pig and cow fat. Before loading the cartridge it had to be bitten and consuming pig and cow fat is against Hinduism.

The usage of new Enfield rifel wasn't liked by anyone but the only person to revolt against was Mangal Pandey . When thier revolution leader was killed sepoys got disheartened and then started the revolt.
