Answer:

In 1856 the British authorities decided to replace the old fashion muskets by new Enfield rifle . The loading process of the Enfield rifle involves bringing the cartridge to the mouth and biting of the top greased paper with the teeth .

In January 1857 there was a rumour in Bengal regiments that greased cartridges had the fat of cow or pig .

The sepoys where now convinced that the introduction of greased cartridges was to deliberate moves to defile Hindu and Muslim religion as cow is sacred to Hindus and the Pig is a Taboo to Muslims .

So both Hindus and Muslims soldiers refused to use these cartridges and staged an uprising when they were forced to use them .

This was an immediate cause which led to the war of independence in 1857.
