States were divided on the basis of language
Explanation:
- India was made up of disjointed princely states during independence in the year 1947, which were combined together to create 27 states. The classification of states at the time was based on historical and political considerations rather than on cultural or linguistic distinctions.
- Before India's independence from British rule, demand for states on a linguistic basis was created, although Indian administrative regions were known as distinct provinces at the time. Odisha became the first linguistically established Indian state in 1936. The linguistic movement in Odisha began in 1895 and intensified later with the demand from the provinces of Bihar and Orissa
- Post-independence era saw the emergence of political movements established on linguistic lines for the formation of new states. Given the multilingual differences and nature which prevailed amongst different states, permanent reorganization of the states was needed.
- The movement to establish language dependent states gained traction in the early 1950s starting with the call for a separate state for Telugu-speaking people. A Gandhian and an railway employee , Potti Sriramulu, was swift to push for an independent language-based state Nehru decided to ignore the fast of Sriramulu. Sriramulu died on the 56th day of his fast, and violence erupted. The States Reorganization Act of 1956 was passed after Sriramulu's death.
