The Wampanoag were told that he died of fever, but many Indians thought that he had been poisoned. The following year, his brother Philip (Metacom) became sachem of theWampanoag. Under Philip's leadership, the relationship changed dramatically between the Wampanoag and thecolonists.

The Wampanoag was a North American Indian tribe. His death was due to fever but the Indians suspected that it was a murder by poison the murderers being the British. Wampanoag’s successor Metacomet made drastic turns in Wampanoag’s policies and organized a major intertribal coalition and a war that lasted for 1675 to 1676. The only purpose being to drive away the British. Metacomet was killed and the Wampanoag were nearly exterminated.
