Western coastal plains receive more rainfall because it lies on the windward side of Western Ghats. Eastern coastal plains lies on the leeward side of the Western Ghats and receives less rainfall.

Western side of the Western Ghats receives direct rain fron South-West Monsoon, whereas Eastern Coastal plain lies in the rain shadow or leeward side of Western Ghats hence receives very little rainfall.
