The reason to that lies in the Geomorphology of the Peninsula. The peninsular plateau is a bit slanting to the east. Western Ghats being higherreceive more rainfall from the SW Monsoon every year. The water now has only two options- either to flow westwards to Arabian Sea or eastwards to Bay of Bengal.
