Answer:

Ceiling fans work by rotating the blades in a 'reverse' counter-clockwise motion to help produce a comfortable breeze or 'windchill' to cool the skin during the hot weather. ... During the winter, ceiling fans help to warm the room by moving warm air trapped on the ceiling by the blades rotating in a clockwise motion.

The ceiling fan direction in summer should be counterclockwise to help create a downdraft, which creates that direct, cooling breeze. Your fan direction in winter needs to be clockwise to create an updraft and circulate warm air around the room.
