this reaction is exothermic therefore heat will be released and water will start boiling

When water is added to calcium oxide (quicklime), it will be converted to calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) with the liberation of enormous amount of heat.

                  CaO + H2O = Ca(OH)2 + heat

It is an exothermic reaction. Calcium hydroxide is an alkali.
