Ocean currents can be generated by wind, density differences in water masses caused by temperature and salinity variations, gravity, and events such as earthquakes. Currents are cohesive streams of seawater that circulate through the ocean.

The prevailing planetary winds (trade, anti- trade or westerlies and the polar winds) play vital roles in the origin and development of ocean currents. Most of the ocean currents of the world follow the direction of prevailing winds. The Gulf stream in the Atlantic ocean and Kuroshio in the Pacific Ocean move in north eastern direction under the influence of the anti- trade winds.
