Men in India see women as weak and helpless. There are more chances of men assaulting a woman when she is alone. Majority of the Indian women are more conscious about what society think about them. Even in broad day light if a man comments or abuses her, though she is bold enough , in 90% of the cases she will not confront him. She feels its rather safe to move away from there. Patriarchal mindset. There is one saying in Telugu which roughly translates to - if a thorn drops onto a leaf or the other way around it is the leaf that gets teared. I think here it is self explanatory who is thorn and who is leaf. Indian women are brought up with such an attitude -- just keep away from bad men, don't confront.

It is because women in India are considered low and are prone to many social evils .Also, women are not encouraged to study and are forced to marry at small age. Even now this is practiced.
