The female is heterogametic (ZW) and can contribute a W or Z chromosome. In birds the homogametic male sex (ZZ) is generally considered to be the “default” sex because in the absence of hormonal and other influences the sexual phenotype is the homogenetic sex.

the female has two identical homologous chromosomes whereas the heterogametic chromosomes are identical.
