Pups are usually born in a den excavated as much as 10 feet into well-drained soil. Sometimes the female selects a hollow log, cave, tree with overhanging branches, or abandoned beaver lodge instead of making a den. At birth, wolf pups are deaf and blind, have dark fuzzy fur and weigh about one pound.
