Work is an scaler quantity because we don't mention direction while talking about work.

Suppose I say you .

You have done 5J work by displacing this table. I'll never say that you have done 5J work in the north direction

it looks awkward to say.

And mathematically work is an scaler quantity.

Work done due to diaplacement caused by a force is a scalar quantity. The dot product of vector quantities is always scalar which means it is has only magnitude and no direction..
