Why would a delta ray come out at right angles to the path of a heavy particle?

the delta rays when passed through the heavy particle are deflected as they hit near the centre or nucleus of the particle , thus the rays can't pass through the nucleus as it is heaviest space of an atom so, it gets deflected to right angles and may even retrace it's own path or can only pass through empty spaces
