The American troop didn't want to fight any more.

The last few campaigns against Japan had shown that the Japanese would fight to the last man in almost any circumstance, and soldiers who had been fighting against Germany for the previous couple of years really wouldn't be excited about subjecting themselves to that kind of battle.

Since the war in Europe ended, many American soldiers stationed in Europe were ordered within a few months to go to the Pacific which meant more death and destruction to them and when the atom bombs were dropped, they cheered they don't have to face more carnage and horror in their lives.
